Saami Language, The Sámi languages are spoken from the Dalarna area in Sweden, in central Norway and northern Finland and to the Kola Peninsula … Mar 24, 2022 · Abstract This chapter provides an introduction to the Saami languages, a chain of indigenous language varieties constituting the westernmost branch of Uralic, especially their reconstructible proto-form, Proto-Saamic, its genesis and central features. There is quite a lot of mutual intelligibility between neighbouring Sami languages, however speakers of more widely separated languages cannot understand one another without learning or extensive exposure to the other language. “Saami” or “Sàmi” are the terms that speakers use for these languages. Note: The terms “Lappish”, “Lappic” and “Lapp” are considered derogatory and are therefore falling out of use. The Sámi languages belong to the Finno-Ugric language family, the same family as Finnish and Hungarian. The term “Sámi” refers to some nine very closely related languages belonging to the Finno-Ugric language family and spoken by the indigenous people of Finland, Norway, Sweden, and the Kola Peninsula of the Russian Federation.
